Questions

Before you book anything

Which area of Palampur is best for a homestay?

For a first visit, Bandla and Chandpur are the strongest homestay areas around Palampur: both sit among working tea gardens within a few kilometres of town, so you get mountain views and quiet without losing access to shops, chemists and buses. Palampur town itself is more convenient but noisier.

What is the difference between staying in Palampur and staying in Bir?

Palampur is a working town at about 1,220 metres with tea estates, a bus stand and year-round services. Bir, 40 km east, is a paragliding and Tibetan settlement village with cafes and hostels. Choose Palampur for comfort and access, Bir for flying and a younger, more international crowd.

When is the best time to visit Palampur?

March to June and September to November are the best months in Palampur. Spring brings the first tea flush and clear Dhauladhar views; autumn is dry with the sharpest mountain visibility. July and August are heavy monsoon months with landslide risk, and December to February is cold but clear.

How do I reach Palampur?

The nearest airport to Palampur is Kangra (Gaggal), roughly 40 km west. The Kangra Valley narrow-gauge railway runs from Pathankot to Baijnath Paprola with a stop at Palampur. By road, Palampur sits on NH-154 and is about 4 hours from Pathankot and 10 to 12 hours from Delhi.

Is Palampur suitable for a trip with elderly parents?

Yes, with care in choosing where you stay. Palampur town and Maranda have level access, tarmac to the door and nearby medical facilities. Avoid hillside properties in Bandla or Billing without asking specifically about steps, the walk from parking and whether a car reaches the entrance.

Do properties near Palampur have heating in winter?

It varies enormously and is rarely stated clearly. Palampur drops close to freezing in January, and many guest houses supply a portable blower rather than real heating, sometimes charged extra per night. Always confirm the type of heating and whether it costs extra before you book a winter stay.

How far is Bir Billing from Palampur?

Bir is about 40 km east of Palampur by road, roughly 75 to 90 minutes depending on traffic through Baijnath. The Billing take-off site is a further 14 km and around 900 metres above Bir on a narrow mountain road that takes another 45 minutes to an hour.

Can I book a stay through Palampur Properties?

We do not take payment or confirm rooms ourselves. Send us your dates and requirements and we will check availability with matching properties and connect you to the owner, who handles the booking directly — which is how most stays in this valley operate.

How much does a homestay near Palampur cost?

Rates in the Palampur belt are set by owners and move sharply with the season. Send an enquiry with your dates and we will get you current prices directly from the properties rather than quoting a figure that may be out of date.

Is Palampur safe for solo female travellers?

Palampur and the wider Kangra valley are generally considered safe, with low reported crime against visitors. Ordinary precautions apply: prefer properties that can be reached without a long unlit walk, share your plans, and save the national emergency number 112 and the tourist helpline 1363 before you travel.
