Baijnath, near Palampur
Baijnath is built around one of the oldest working Shiva temples in the western Himalaya — the Baijnath (Vaidyanath) temple, a Nagara-style stone shrine dated by its inscriptions to 1204 AD, which survived the 1905 Kangra earthquake that flattened much of the valley. The town is also the terminus of the Kangra Valley narrow-gauge railway at Baijnath Paprola, which makes it an unusually easy arrival point.
A temple town with real pilgrim traffic, especially around Shivratri. Quieter and cheaper than Bir, twenty minutes away.
