Palampur sits at about 1,220 metres where the Kangra valley floor tilts up into the Dhauladhar. Tea has been grown here since Dr William Jameson introduced the bush in 1849, and the estates still shape the town: you get gardens on one side of a road and a granite wall of mountain on the other. It is a working town — an agricultural university, a CSIR research institute, a bus stand, a mandi — rather than a resort, and stays here tend to be practical, well-connected and open year-round.

Stay in Palampur if you want tarmac to the door, a chemist at 9pm and a bus out in any direction. It is the least romantic and most reliable base in the belt.

Good for

  • First-time visitors
  • Year-round access
  • Families
  • Short trips

Watch out for

  • The town centre is noisy from about 7am — the mandi and the bus stand both start early.
  • Views vary enormously street to street. "Mountain facing" in Palampur town often means one gap between two buildings.
