Tea has been grown here since Dr William Jameson introduced the bush in 1849, and the estates still shape the town: you get gardens on one side of a road and a granite wall of mountain on the other. It is a working town — an agricultural university, a CSIR research institute, a bus stand, a mandi — rather than a resort, and stays here tend to be practical, well-connected and open year-round.
