Where to stay in Holta
Holta sits a few kilometres north-east of Palampur on the road towards Chandpur, and it is defined by what was built here rather than by tourism. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute’s regional station, the CSK Himachal Pradesh Agricultural University campus and an army cantonment all sit within a couple of kilometres of each other, which gives the area good roads, reliable power and a settled, residential character that most of the valley’s villages do not have. It is also where Kangra tea began: the first commercial estate in the valley was planted at Holta in 1852, three years after Dr Jameson identified the slopes as suitable.
Quiet, orderly and unusually well-serviced for a village. You are close enough to Palampur to be there in ten minutes, and far enough out that the Dhauladhar fills the window rather than a neighbour’s wall.
